Antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter jejuni: I. Steinhauserová and M. Mikulicova

چکیده
The aim of this study was to discover the situation in antibiotic resistance of C. jejuni isolated from poultry (121 strains) and from human (85 strains) in the Czech Republic in 2003 and 2004 and to compare the results with situation in other countries. The obtained strains were tested for their susceptibility to tetracycline, nalidixic acid, chloramphenicol, erythromycin and ciprofloxacin by agar dilution method. Strains isolated both from poultry and from humans showed the highest resistance to ciprofloxacin 59%, resp. 69%. About 30% of the strains isolated from poultry and from humans were resistant to nalidixic acid. It can be concluded from the obtained results that the incidence rate of resistant strains in poultry is similar as in humans. Based on obtained results, we can state that antibiotic resistance of C. jejuni isolated from poultry and from humans has been developing in the similar way in our country as in the other countries monitored, with lower resistance of some antibiotics observed in countries. The situation in antibiotic resistance to tetracycline and erythromycin in the Czech Republic was evaluated as favourable.

Isolation of plasmids encoding tetracycline resistance from Campylobacter jejuni strains isolated from simians.
Fifteen isolates of tetracycline-resistant Campylobacter jejuni were recovered from stool samples of cynomologous monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) housed at the University of Washington Primate Research Center, Seattle. Resistance was associated with carriage of a 38-megadalton plasmid which was transmissible to other strains of C. jejuni but not to Escherichia coli. Seven isolates also contained ...
متن کاملCampylobacter jejuni biofilms contain extracellular DNA and are sensitive to DNase I treatment
Biofilms make an important contribution to survival and transmission of bacterial pathogens in the food chain. The human pathogen Campylobacter jejuni is known to form biofilms in vitro in food chain-relevant conditions, but the exact roles and composition of the extracellular matrix are still not clear. Extracellular DNA has been found in many bacterial biofilms and can be a major component of...
متن کاملRole of Cj1211 in natural transformation and transfer of antibiotic resistance determinants in Campylobacter jejuni.
Campylobacter jejuni, an important food-borne human pathogen, is increasingly resistant to antimicrobials. Natural transformation is considered to be a main mechanism for mediating the transfer of genetic materials encoding antibiotic resistance determinants in C. jejuni, but direct evidence for this notion is still lacking. In this study, we determined the role of Cj1211 in natural transformat...

The MICs of 16 antimicrobial agents were determined for 202 Campylobacter jejuni isolates, 123 Campylobacter coli isolates, and 6 Campylobacter lari isolates from humans and food animals in Denmark. The C. jejuni isolates originated from humans (75), broilers (95), cattle (29), and pigs (3); the C. coli isolates originated from humans (7), broilers (17), and pigs (99); and the C. lari isolates ...
متن کاملAntimicrobial susceptibilities of Campylobacter strains isolated from food animals in Belgium.
Campylobacter spp. are a frequent cause of diarrhoea in man, originating mostly from poultry. It has been suggested that the veterinary use of antibiotics is largely responsible for resistance in human isolates, particularly to quinolones. During a 6 month period from June to December 1998, 677 Campylobacter isolates were obtained from healthy poultry and pigs. Samples were taken at Belgian sla...
